Win a Microchip Bluetooth Dual Mode PICtail Board

Win a Microchip Dual Mode PICtail Board (RN-4678-PICTAIL) from Electronic Specifier. The RN4678 PICtail is a Bluetooth Dual Mode demonstration board using the Microchip RN4678 Bluetooth Dual Mode module. The RN4678 module is a Dual mode Bluetooth module that complies with Bluetooth Core Specification 4.2.

The RN4678 is interfaced using a simple command interface over the UART. Out of the box, this versatile dev board utilises it’s built in USB-to-Serial capability (enabled by an on-board MCP2200) to communicate with the on-board RN4678.

When plugged in to a PC, the board will enumerate as Communication Device Class (CDC) Serial device. Through a terminal programme, user can configure and control the module and transfer data using the easy to use provided command set.

The RN4678 module provides an easy-to-use solution for designers looking to leverage both Bluetooth low energy (BLE) and Bluetooth Basic Rate/Enhanced Data Rate (BR/EDR) to connect new, or existing, designs to the cloud.

The certified module uses Bluetooth v4.2, enabling increased transmission speeds while conserving power for longer battery life.

The RN4678 module features include:

  • A full Bluetooth stack onboard providing the flexibility to use either the ASCII command to develop an application with the internal microcontroller (MCU) or to use an external MCU
  • Support for the iAP2 protocol to enable communication from accessories to iOS devices
  • Easily-implemented security enhancements, such as white list and random address features, enabled through a single ASCII command interface
  • A configurable beacon feature, compatible with Eddystone and iBeacon technology, to generate beacons for indoor location tracking and proximity applications
  • Support for Microchip’s BeaconThings technology which automates two-way data transfer between devices when a beacon is in range, eliminating the need for a user to unlock the mobile device and launch an app
  • Complete FCC, IC, CE, NCC, KCC, SRRC and MIC certifications to accelerate global deployment.
