Murata technology and new pyroelectric ceramic materials have led to the launch of a lead-free, surface-mount pyroelectric infrared (PIR) sensor, now available from TTI, Inc. Until now, the lack of a surface-mount PIR has limited the market for human detection use.
The new PIR surface mount sensor is lead free and is designed to withstand solder reflow processes. Capable of better detection accuracy than traditional PIR sensors, Murata’s SMD PIR sensor enables expansion into a variety of new markets, including consumer electronics, mobile phones, and game machines.

By making the sensor surface-mountable, the volume occupied by the device is now 30 percent that required by traditional PIR sensors, resulting in lower costs. Height has also been reduced to approximately 60 percent that of the traditional PIR sensor, enabling the sensor to be used in ‘thin-model’ or ‘low-height’ electronic devices and equipment.

Designed for ease-of-use, the surface-mounting pyroelectric infrared sensor targets applications that need to address cost-effectiveness, energy-efficiency and eco-friendly issues.
