Fairchild Semiconductor’s FSSD06 is said to be the first multiplexer that supports high voltage and dual voltage secure digital (SD)/secure digital I/O (SDIO)/ multimedia cards, creating the ability to expand the ASIC and the baseband processor SDIO port. The FSSD06 is ideal for use in multi-functional portable applications such as GPS devices, cell phones, digital cameras, MP3 players and printers. This secure data, two-port multiplexer enables a 1.8V host processor to interface with high-voltage and dual-voltage cards, providing seamless, bi-directional communication while consuming only 1µA of battery power.
Fairchild’s FSSD06 is distinctive in allowing an application’s processor to multiplex between secure digital, secure digital I/O, multimedia cards and peripherals. For example, a handset processor can communicate with a 2.7V music card and a 1.8V GPS card using the FSSD06. Alternative solutions only offer switching functions or simple level-shifting capabilities. In comparison, the FSSD06’s expanded capability results in fewer external components, and therefore reduces system cost.

“Handset processors have historically been limited to the number of SD/SDIO/MMC ports they were designed for. Fairchild’s secure data, two-port multiplexer now allows the processor to seamlessly multiplex between an SD card, SDIO card and MMC cards and peripherals,” said Patty Miske, switch marketing manager for Fairchild’s Analog Products Group. “Designers of handheld electronics have an array of voltage options to choose from. As processors continue to advance in complexity, they will be faced with increasing challenges when accommodating the processor and peripheral voltage requirements.”

The FSSD06 adds to Fairchild’s comprehensive portfolio of products designed to meet the application demands of the portable market, such as increased performance, longer battery life and smaller form factors. These products utilize lead-free (Pb-free) terminals and have been characterized for moisture sensitivity in accordance with the Pb-free reflow requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020. All of Fairchild's products are designed to meet the requirements of the European Union's Directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances (RoHS).
