Renesas Technology supports Icera Espresso cellular WWAN mini card

Renesas Technology’s Draco EDGE solution is to support Icera’s Espresso Cellular WWAN mini card platform, the company announced today. The Icera Espresso is an optimised Cellular WWAN mini-card reference platform that supports the next generation of broadband cellular integration to laptop PCs. The platform fully supports 3GPP release 5 multimode HSDPA that delivers peak data-rates of 3.6Mbps and is fully scalable to 7.2Mbps and HSUPA – without hardware change.
Renesas’s Draco offers a highly integrated solution, simplifying the use of EDGE RF in any application and featuring auto calibration mechanism to ensure fast time-to-market.

Renesas was the first supplier to develop the polar loop architecture for EDGE, and the latest generation makes a significant step in silicon integration to create a small size, compact design and a very low number of external components.

The polar loop operation and calibration uses patented auto calibration, removing the need for measurement equipment on the production line and improving performance. The system is easy to design and highly stable in manufacture.

Built around the Icera Livanto ICE8020 device and the Icera Adaptive Wireless™ HSDPA/EDGE wireless soft modem solution, the Espresso platform delivers the highest performance in multimode 2G / 3G networks. Espresso supports a full EDGE Class 12 capability and is unique in the industry today in offering full support for 3GPP-defined enhanced Type 3 receiver technology, supporting simultaneous receive diversity and equalisation for the highest throughput in real network situations.
