This is because Elan Digital believes that SDIO (which includes the commonly used SD memory slot technology) will soon become the de-facto method of providing high speed I/O interface to UMPC and UMIDs as well as Smartphones/PDA and standard PCs. SDIO offers all the key advantages of very small physical size ( Micro SD format), inherently robust construction, low power, high speed and, most importantly, low cost.
WiMAX modems based on SDIO technology are already available and Elan Digital has created a chipset family to provide the bridge to PCIe, MIPI, GP bus and USB.
A unique feature of Elan Digital’s chip design activity is the in-house manufacture of end user hardware. In other words, Elan uses its chips to manufacture end equipment. As a result this provides the engineering team with valuable insight into product strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to improve quality & reliability of the products they design.
