Strawberry-picking robots to gather enough fruit for Wimbledon
Wimbledon fans, who consume 34 thousand kilos of strawberries every year, could one day get their strawberries picked by a small group of new robots, developed in Europe, that use photonics to detect a fruit, and are capable of gathering enough berries for the championships in less than a week.
Should robotics education be compulsory in schools?
Robotics education should be made part of the school curriculum, according to a fifth of UK adults polled to mark the official start of UK Robotics Week (20th to 27th June 2019). Twenty percent of a representative sample of UK adults want compulsory lessons to be given in the nation’s schools so that children can fully engage with learning about robotics technology.
Scanning eye providing robot sight
Robots must be equipped with sensors and software for three-dimensional vision in order to gain a spatial understanding of and precisely control objects in their environment. A research team at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems (IPMS) has been developing and manufacturing micro-scanner mirrors, ‘MEMS’ scanners, which provide robots an ability similar to human vision needed to perceive objects and perform demanding tas...
Can a switch to robots transform competitiveness?
If you’ve ever considered adding robots to your production line but don’t know where to start, then ABB’s Switch to Robots seminar could be what you need. Taking place at ABB’s Milton Keynes training site on Tuesday 2nd July 2019, the seminar will provide a simple step-by-step guide to introducing robotic automation to the factory floor.
Redefining the competence of robots in industrial automation
Serving as the cornerstone of industrial robots that are already in use across industries, the robotic tool changers are playing a pivotal role in improving their overall productivity and efficiency. With mass shifting of factories to Industry 4.0, adoption of robotic tool changers marks an important step for businesses toward achieving complete industrial automation. By Santosh Kumar, Fact.MR
Drone technology meets manual soldering
CURPAS and Ersa held two workshops 'drone meets soldering iron' with soldering and fight demonstration at universities. "Drones are safe and reliable when, among other things, all components are correctly soldered," said Jörg Nolte, Product Manager Soldering Tools, Rework and Inspection Systems, started his introductory lecture at the two workshops on manual soldering at the University of Zielona Gora in Poland and at the Technical Univ...
Configurable modular transfer for robot assembly cells
A solution for robotic assembly by Yamaha Factory Automation Section, the LCM100 linear conveyor module, enables cleaner, quieter, and more flexible workpiece transport. By simplifying production startup, reducing cycle times, and increasing accuracy, the modules boost productivity and yield, while also cutting noise, increasing reliability, and reducing the size of robot assembly cells.
Kitronik Launches ‘Lesson in a Box’ Robotics Pack
Following extensive consultation with teachers, Kitronik is set to launch its first ‘Lesson in a Box’ product at this year’s ISTE EdTech Conference, held in Philadelphia, from 23th-26th June.
Innovation in factory automation and robotics
Electronic Specifier’s Joe Bush caught up with Matthieu Chevrier, Systems and Application Manager, Texas Instruments (TI), to find out the role the company’s solutions are playing in helping to shape the factories of tomorrow. The catch-22 scenario for manufacturing is that times to market are shrinking, yet design complexity is increasing rapidly. Therefore, there are a number of emerging trends that are driving industrial proce...
Modern robotics playing a key role at Chernobyl
The Chernobyl nuclear disaster has hit the news recently. April marked the 33rd anniversary of the catastrophic accident at the Soviet reactor, near the city of Pripyat, in modern day Ukraine, in 1986. In addition, a five-part historical drama starring Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson, is also attracting plenty of viewers on Sky Atlantic.
