Automotive shunt resistors cut component count
Automotive Grade Power Metal Plate shunt resistors featuring a 20W power rating in a 3939-size package with Kelvin terminals have been introduced by Vishay Intertechnology. With their high power density, the Vishay Dale hybrid-mount WFPA3939 and WFPB3939 are designed to save space, decrease component counts, and increase measurement accuracy in automotive, industrial, and AMS applications.
New treatments for hearing loss may be on the horizon
A new genetic study in mice has identified two proteins that help organise the development of the hair cells that pick up sound waves in the inner ear. Researchers at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD, believe that their findings could hold the key to reversing hearing loss that arises from damaged hair cells. A recent paper in the journal eLife gives a full account of the investigation.
Device optimisation with new compact cartridge valve
Bürkert has been opening up optimisation opportunities for device makers with the introduction of its 11mm long Type 6164 cartridge valve. This compact solution for pneumatic applications can offer up to a 40% space saving compared to traditional valves, thanks to its ability to fit directly into custom manifolds, eliminating external packaging. Its combination of strong performance within a compact footprint is suited for medical device man...
Inspired by nature robots learn to swarm on the go
A new generation of swarming robots which can independently learn and evolve new behaviours in the wild is one step closer, thanks to research from the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England (UWE). The team used artificial evolution to enable the robots to automatically learn swarm behaviours which are understandable to humans.
Why do devices with position tracking require an internet connection?
In a few months the European satellite system Galileo will be completed. Most devices with location tracking functions already support it. Even so, their manufacturers should endeavour to implement over-the-air access, as this is the only way that satellite selection can be adjusted on demand as needed – something which can be a critical factor. Apollo 11: A future in space, thanks to our past
A chorus of alarms serenaded the nervous astronauts as the Eagle lunar module descended toward the moon’s surface. The tension was palpable, and the shrill ringing only added to their worries. Guest blog written by Ranjan Sikand, Wind River Intern.
Reference designs aid UK RIA12 compliance
Two railway power supply reference designs from RECOM, available now at Dengrove Electronic Components, solve engineering challenges including filter layout for EN 50121-3-2 EMC compliance and surge prevention meeting the UK RIA12 specification.
Guidance offered in rotary latch selection
Ubiquitous in the car, truck and specialist vehicle industry, rotary latches make easy work of securing and remotely opening vehicle panels. They’re more typically used in applications involving bonnet, boot lid or storage compartments, e.g. on coaches, emergency vehicles or caravans etc. In these everyday situations we rely on comfortable, reliable manual operation to provide security and accessibility.
Hyperbolic mirrors for deep space observation
Optical Surfaces has developed a hyperbolic mirror for deep space observation. A hyperbolic mirror is the optical component of choice for precisely and accurately focusing light in a telescope from one focal point to the other focal point. Hyperbolic mirrors are used in a telescope design to correct certain distortions caused by an extremely fast f-ratio design.
Robotic reliability in electronics manufacturing at SMTA Symposium
Weller Tools is co-hosting a technical symposium with industry partners, Indium and MicroCare at the Atlanta Tech Park in Peachtree Corners, GA on 12th September, 2019 during SMTA Atlanta. Scheduled to take place from 8:00am-1:00pm, the focus of the half-day reliability event is to gather electronics industry leaders to deliver presentations in the areas of their expertise.
