TU Wien presents innovative electric drive
An innovation from TU Wien brings significant advantages for electric vehicles and many other uses: The electric planet motor integrates motor and gear unit, while being space-saving, failure-resistant and energy-efficient. It is now being presented at the Hannover Messe 2017. The electric motor is a tried-and-tested concept. This, however, does not mean that there is no more space for revolutionary improvements. Usually, motor and gearbox a...
Robotic revolutions and the life science industry
The life sciences industry is always address production challenges that we face, and looking further into this, Neal Welch of Mitsubishi Electric explains how in demanding applications such as the manipulating of live cultures, robots are in a league of their own.
Epoxy delivers strong bonds for aerospace applications
A two component epoxy has been released by Master Bond. The EP45HTAN features thermal conductivity, electrical insulation and a service temperature range of -269.15 to 260°C (4K to 500°F). This high strength system bonds well to metals, particularly to roughened titanium.
Wearable sweat sensor can diagnose cystic fibrosis
A wristband-type wearable sweat sensor could transform diagnostics and drug evaluation for cystic fibrosis, diabetes and other diseases. The sensor collects sweat, measures its molecular constituents and then electronically transmits the results for analysis and diagnostics, according to a study led by researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine, in collaboration with the University of California-Berkeley.
Non-invasive VNS cleared for episodic cluster headaches
electroCore has announced that the U.S. FDA released the use of gammaCore (non-invasive vagus nerve stimulator) for the acute treatment of pain associated with episodic cluster headache in adult patients. gammaCore transmits a mild electrical stimulation to the vagus nerve through the skin, resulting in a reduction of pain. This is the first FDA product release for electroCore in the U.S.
Digital inhaler add-on offers slick aid to asthma care
What do you get by marrying an asthma inhaler to a wireless monitor and a smartphone app? Plenty, says David Van Sickle, a medical anthropologist who specialises in respiratory disease. In 2011, Van Sickle created a spinoff called Propeller Health while he was working on respiratory disease prevention at UW Health in Madison.
Experiment yields clue to devastating neurological disease
After a 29-year quest, Ian Duncan, a professor of veterinary medicine at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, has finally pinpointed the cause of a serious neurologic disease in a colony of rats. His new study, now online in the journal Annals of Neurology, is more than the conclusion of a personal and intellectual odyssey, however.
Researchers identify gene for adapting to changing seasons
University of Toronto researchers have identified a gene that determines whether the body will adapt to changing seasons. The gene, a micro-RNA called miR-132/212, is part of a mechanism in the brain's central timekeeping system, known as the circadian clock, located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus. This gene has also been previously implicated in mood disorders including depression.
Portable Positive Airway Pressure system can be used anywhere
Royal Philips has announced the launch of DreamStation Go, its newest and smallest positive airway pressure (PAP) device designed to simplify travel for patients living with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). At half the size of Philips’ previous generation devices, DreamStation Go delivers the same clinically-proven performance and comfort, for reliable, convenient therapy on-the-go.
Packet analysers released with all wireless protocols
It has been announced that GL Communications have released its enhanced PacketScan software, an All-IP Packet Analyser, with wire-speed performance, capture, and analysis – spanning voice, video, and data services.
