ESCATEC has designed a next gen, miniaturised TIR (Total Internal Reflection) lens for high brightness LEDs. About a twentieth of the size of current TIR lenses, ESCATEC's next gen TIR lens is mounted directly onto the bare LED and secured in place with special clear optical glue.

By automating the production and test processes, ESCATEC has reduced the manufacturing costs of a medical patch pump by 20%. The initial contract for a few thousand unit prototype run of the PCB was done using ESCATEC's SMT line is Switzerland. However, the customer then asked for additional components, such as sensors, to be added that had to be done by hand, taking several minutes per unit and adding to the production cost.

ESCATEC Medical Sdn Bhd is now FDA registered as a Medical Device Contract Manufacturer under FDA 21 CFR Part 820 QSR (registration number 3010354240). The company has already been approved to the ISO13485 quality management standard for medical device manufacturers for a number of years.

Wireless testing has been installed at ESCATEC’s manufacturing facility in Heerbrugg, Switzerland. "The Internet of Things will mean that almost all products will have some form of wireless interface," said Thomas Eschenmoser, ESCATEC's Section Head Test Engineering. 

The automatic testing of LCDs has been a challenge for manufacturing and test house ESCATEC. "We found that the LCD displays had strange patterns on them," said Thomas Eschenmoser, ESCATEC's Section Head Test Engineering.  "We worked out that these are Moire patterns caused by an interference between the images on the arrays in the LCD and in the image sensor in the camera." 

Contract manufacturer ESCATEC is launching a complete Built In Self Test (BIST) creation service for customers.  It eliminates the process of several companies, including the customer, having to work together to create a complete solution for production testing that links into NI LabVIEW/TestStand PC test software.

There are many stages to creating and making a new product from the initial concept through to selling to the customer, but the stage that is often overlooked is test.  A product designer will typically think that testing is a matter for the manufacturer and never consider incorporating features specifically to facilitate testing. 

ESCATEC is introducing its ESCADA software into its contract manufacturing facilities. ESCADA enables the data gathered at the testing phase to be intelligently used to reduce manufacturing faults. Pioneered and developed in its central European facility in Heerbrugg, Switzerland, last year, the specially written data analysis software will be installed at ESCATEC's high volume manufacturing facilities in Malaysia in 2015.
