On board wireless charger for EVs provides galvanic isolation

An On-Board Charger (OBC) is used in an Electric Vehicle (EV) or Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) to charge the traction battery from 48-800V.

Functions of the OBC from Texas Instruments include:

  • Converting the grid 50/60Hz to DC
  • Adjusting the DC voltage to the levels required by the battery
  • Providing galvanic isolation
  • Power Factor Correction (PFC)
  • Motor control to prevent damage by arcs caused by hot unplugging

Wireless chargers are gaining significant traction in the automotive industry, and are expected to have at least 95% efficiency of wired charger electronics.

Alignment of both transmission and receiver coils play a significant role in improving the charger’s efficiency and performance.
