Industrial measurement systems incorporating vision sensors

Today we interact with devices that recognise facial expressions or hand gestures on a daily basis. Whether it is games consoles, tablets or mobile phones, our day-to-day life is full with devices that tend to be controlled by buttons on a front panel or even feature context-sensitive touch screen interfaces. Now industrial measurement systems are utilising this technology to change the way we interact at the workplace.

Technology has advanced to allow instruments to fulfil many functions, for example, measurement runs being stopped and started with a hand gesture such as a wave, with facial recognition verifying that it’s an authorised person giving the wave. A multitude of factors including age, gender and even mood estimation can be recognised by vision sensors such as Omron’s HVC. Introduce these options alongside more traditional measurements like temperature and pressure and the opportunities are boundless.
