The UK government’s final investment decision on Sizewell C has signalled a clear intention: to put nuclear energy at the centre of the country’s long-term energy security and low-carbon ambitions.
After more than a decade of hesitation, the commitment to this £38 billion project marks not just the start of a new nuclear power station, but the beginning of a wider industrial and energy strategy – one that the electronics supply chain will inevitably be a part of.
Sizewell C, based in Suffolk, is set to deliver clean electricity to the equivalent of six million homes and support 10,000 jobs during peak construction. The nuclear plant is expected to operate for at least sixty years, helping the UK to move away from global fossil fuel markets and volatile energy pricing. The government claimed the plant could eventually save consumers up to £2 billion per year across the low-carbon electricity system.
