The Open University co-produces ‘Inside the Factory’ episode

The Open University (OU) has embarked on an exciting collaboration with the BBC, co-producing the eighth series of the show ‘Inside the Factory’.

The series premiered on BBC Two at 9pm on Wednesday 27 December, featuring an in-depth look at the production of Yorkshire Puddings, a key component of the Christmas dinner.

Hosts Gregg Wallace and Cherry Healey offer viewers a unique glimpse into the extensive production processes of various British factories.

‘Inside the Factory’ delves into the intricate manufacturing processes of common supermarket and household items. The series covers a wide range of products including jellybeans, jeans, stuffed pasta, Stout, bath bombs, carpets, chocolate bars, sofas, and paint.

The series, a commission by Broadcast and Partnerships, was developed with insights from three OU academic consultants: Professor William Nuttall from the School of Engineering & Innovation, Dr Emilie Rutledge from the School of Social Sciences & Global Studies, and Dr Matthew Hinton from the OU Business School.

Regarding the first episode that aired on Wednesday, Professor William Nuttall, from the faculty of STEM at the OU, commented on the meticulous preparation of Yorkshire Puddings in factories: “The care and precision with which this festive staple is prepared in the factory is really most impressive.”

The series has relevance to the following qualification pathways:

Q65 Bachelor of Engineering, C49 Postgraduate Certificate in Technology Management and TB801 Technology and Innovation Management in STEM.
