An overview of DC power connector selection

DC power connectors, often referred to as barrel connectors, play a small, but important role in providing power to many end applications. While a relatively simple component by their very nature, dc power connectors still have several design considerations to take into account before making the proper selection.

Mechanical considerations such as the inner pin and outer sleeve diameters need to be noted to ensure compatible mating connections between a jack and plug or receptacle and plug. Electrical specifications, mounting styles, and conductor options represent a few other areas where a basic understanding can further simplify the selection of a dc power connector.

This CUI Insights blog post, “How to Select a DC Power Connector” provides an overview of key barrel connector specifications and nomenclature. It also highlights potential pitfalls of using audio connectors in power applications, while discussing the growing trend of utilizing power only USB connectors.
