The Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery at Imperial College London has announced the key workshops of the Hamlyn Symposium on Medical Robotics 2018, plus the launch of a new CEO and Founders Forum. The interactive and hands-on workshops - spanning deep-learning for medical robotics to wearable and assisted robots - will take place on 24th June and 27th June 2018 (from 9am-1pm, and 2-5.30pm), and the new CEO and Founders Forum will be held on June 26th.

The Hamlyn Symposium and Surgical Robot Challenge - held during the Symposium - are core events of UK Robotics Week, which returns from 21st-29th June 2018.

New for this year at the Hamlyn Symposium, an exclusive CEO and Founders Forum will be held on June 26th from 2-3.30pm at the Royal Geographical Society in London. The forum will feature six CEOs and Founders of some of the world’s most prominent medical robotics companies:

  • Brian Miller, Intuitive Surgical
  • Frederic H. Moll, Auris Surgical Robotics
  • Michael Otto, KUKA Roboter GmbH
  • Yulun Wang, InTouch Health
  • Bradley Nelson, Aeon Scientific
  • Martin Frost, CMR Surgical

These global industry leaders will share their experiences during the panel discussion, and discuss their challenges, frustrations and solutions.

In addition to the CEO and Founders Forum and a full programme of interactive workshops, the 11th Hamlyn Symposium on Medical Electronics offers a two-day main conference with invited keynote speakers, paper authors and delegates from leading medical, science and technology institutions covering topics including clinical specialities in Urology, Cardiac Surgery, Neuro Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Gynaecology, ENT, Orthopaedic and Paediatric Surgery.

This year’s programme of Hamlyn Symposium workshops will explore:

  • Advances in Image-Guided Ophthalmic Interventions
  • Endoluminal Intervention
  • Learning and Autonomy for Medical Robotics
  • Soft and Continuum Robots Across Scales
  • Advanced Biophotonics
  • Brain-Computer Interfacing
  • Deep Learning for Medical Robotics
  • Implantable Sensors and Robotics
  • Materials Science for Medical Robotics
  • Micro-Robotics and Drug Delivery
  • Surgical Robotics: First in Human
  • Wearable and Assistive Robots
  • Image Guided Therapy

Further topics addressed by the 2018 symposium will include new instruments and novel mechatronic designs; intra-operative imaging and sensing; bioinspired robotics; MR-compatible robots; smart surgical instruments; microbot design and applications; robotic surgical workflows and analytic; and surgical vision and augmented reality.

Commenting on the Hamlyn Symposium programme launch, Professor Guang-Zhong Yang PhD, FREng, Director and Co-founder of the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery at Imperial College London said: “The Hamlyn Symposium is undoubtedly a key international highlight for the top researchers in medical robotics innovation, and we are particularly excited about this year’s wide-ranging symposium programme, our expanded range of interactive workshops, plus our new CEO and Founders Forum, which promises to be a stand-out and highly popular event.”

Now in its third successive year, the annual UK Robotics Week shines a spotlight on the UK’s capabilities in robotics and autonomous systems innovation. The grand finale of UK Robotics Week - the International Robotics Showcase - will this year be held as part of the International Business Festival in Liverpool. The all-day Showcase will take place on 21st June 2018 at the Exhibition Centre Liverpool, Kings Dock on the Liverpool Waterfront.
