Renesas Technology Europe announced today that the outstanding electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) performance of its H8, R8C and SuperH microcontroller families has been confirmed by the independent testing company Langer EMV-Technik GmbH. According to its own immunity levels appreciation, Langer EMV-Technik commented that the Renesas MCUs were rated very highly with almost all pins being able to withstand bursts of 480V. Renesas MCUs' good EMC performance helps reduce development costs, as the microcontroller no longer needs to be protected by a specific transient voltage surge suppressor or an expensive multilayer ceramic capacitor.
One of the most common sources of electrical noise in domestic white goods is inductive components (such as motors, induction rings or relays) through which a current is interrupted. The measurement system devised by Langer EMV enables comprehensive testing of the microcontroller's response to Electric Fast Transient (burst) tests on each pin. The injected noise and voltage spikes / pulses can even reach 480V on the signal pins. Langer EMV has tested products within major Renesas MCU families including the H8/Tiny series, the R8C family and the SH/Tiny series, all of which are popularly used in white goods applications for both system and motor control.

Renesas Technology Europe focuses on supplying microcontroller based solutions for a wide range of applications within the digital home such as white goods, small appliances, utility metering, in home displays, HVAC, security, healthcare and audio visual. Vincent Mignard, Renesas' Marketing Engineer for White Goods and Motor Control, comments: The electronic content of home appliances is continuing to grow and the environment in which they operate can be subject to a lot of electrical noise, especially in white goods. Accordingly, white goods manufacturers are looking increasingly for microcontrollers that have robust protection against electro-magnetic interference (EMI). The Langer EMV tests confirm that Renesas' microcontrollers are perfectly designed for such applications.
