Element Materials Technology (Element), a global provider of Testing, Inspection, and Certification (TIC) services, has invested $10 million in a connected technologies laboratory near Guildford, England, to support advancements in consumer electronics.

This new facility, Element Surrey Hills, spans 25,000 sq. ft and has been developed with the collaboration of a top global technology manufacturer, aimed at accelerating product market entry in Europe.

Element Surrey Hills, equipped with the latest technology and infrastructure, will increase capacity for crucial Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), radio, and wireless testing. It will also introduce Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) testing to Element's service portfolio in Europe, complementing its existing SAR capabilities in the USA and South Korea.

The laboratory's construction and design were influenced by insights from Element's global team, including colleagues from Europe, the USA, and South Korea. They contributed to its design and setup, ensuring it adheres to top global standards. Customers at Surrey Hills will benefit from ongoing access to Element’s worldwide network of experts, fostering a culture of collaborative and fair knowledge sharing.

Matt Hopkinson, Executive Vice President of EMEAA at Element, remarked: “Consumer electronics are becoming extremely complex and they are required to meet ever changing global regulatory requirements. With this new laboratory, we can offer the best testing facilities to enable the latest technologies to come to market, be sold, and used across the world, supporting the increased rate of innovation amongst product developers. We proudly support manufacturers across the full product life-cycle, from R&D to launch.”

Element Surrey Hills has achieved full accreditation to UKAS 17025 and has been designated as a PTCRB Associate Test Lab, capable of testing 2G, 4G, and 5G RSE (GERAN, E-UTRA, 5G FR1), offering enhanced support for operators and device manufacturers in ensuring their devices' interoperability with wireless networks.

Additionally, Element has established partnerships with local universities to provide engineering students with formal training in regulation and testing. These partnerships also support Element's ongoing recruitment, career development, and training initiatives. To date, nine local students have joined the Element Surrey Hills team, either as seasonal workers or in full-time roles.

Element Surrey Hills is part of Element's global network of 44 connected technologies and mobility facilities, spanning the UK, USA, Germany, China, South Korea, and Japan, supported by a team of over 1,200 technology experts.
