Bosch Sensortec has achieved cumulative shipments of 400m barometric sensors to enable development of mobile applications such as weather forecasting, altitude measurement, indoor navigation with floor level tracking, used for navigation, fitness and sports applications.

Barometric pressure sensors also enhance GPS/GNSS precision - vital when only a low number of satellites are available or when the GPS signal is compromised or distorted. The barometric pressure sensor has become a key differentiator for high-end smart phones.

Bosch Sensortec’s latest digital barometric pressure sensor, BMP280, delivers superior performance with a relative accuracy of ±0.12hPa which is equivalent to ±1m, a current consumption of just 2.7µA and is packed in what is claimed to be the industry’s smallest footprint to provide best-in-class pressure and temperature measurements.

"With the BMP280, our customers can benefit from the outstanding success and deep experience we have gained from our MEMS business - representing years of development and production know-how together with the highest volume manufacturing capability in this field. We see these applications emerging as high growth business areas; we can help and support developers to gain a highly differentiated advantage for their customers” said Jeanne Forget-Funk, Head of Marketing, Bosch Sensortec.”

In combination with Bosch Sensortec's precise altitude profiling software, these sensors provide accurate altitude measurement. This software intelligently fuses the pressure sensor data with reference values - either directly from GPS signal or calculated from sea level pressure value provided by the nearest weather station via web service - depending on their availability.
