Wideband GaN MMIC amplifier saves space in comms and test equipment

A wideband gallium nitride (GaN) power amplifier, the HMC8205, covers the 300MHz to 6GHz spectrum and offers best-in-class performance in a compact design, claims Analog Devices.

The GaN monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) integrated power amplifier can be used in applications such as wireless infrastructure, radar, public mobile radio, and general-purpose amplification test equipment where pulse or continuous wave (CW) support is required. The GaN MMIC amplifier requires minimal external circuitry, thereby reducing overall component count and board space, adds the company.

Integration includes combining DC feed/RF bias choke, DC blocking capacitors and driver stage on a single design. The power amplifier delivers 35W with up to 44% power added efficiency across an instantaneous bandwidth. The HMC8205 is distinguished from alternative designs, by being able to operates both pulse and continuous wave, claims Analog Devices. The compact device is offered in a lead flange mount package and is in full production, with samples available now.
