To match a variety of electric household appliances (white goods), the lineup of new TRIACs includes current ratings of 4 A, 10 A, 12 A, and 16 A. The available packages are the TO-220 and MP3A (uninsulated, footprint compatible to DPAK), and theTO-220FL (insulated). The products include planar technology which minimizes off-state leak current.
The new TRIACs have a voltage rating of 800 V and achieve the highest commutation level in the industry. The critical rate of the rise of off-state commutating voltage (dv/dt)c, for which a high value is necessary to avoid malfunction, is approximately two to 20 times that of previous Renesas Technology TRIAC products. This ensures that the TRIAC can turn off safely when controlling an inductive load such as a motor. It also eliminates the need for a CR absorber circuit to prevent malfunction during commutation, reducing the overall system cost.
The new TRIACs have a guaranteed voltage of 800 V to ensure safe operation in regions where the power supply voltage is AC ranging from 200 V to 240V. The new TRIACs achieve a junction temperature (Tj) of 150°C and 800 V. This makes thermal design much easier compared with 125°C TRIAC products and allows the use of a smaller cooling fin.
