Power modules for telecom at embedded world

Flex Power Modules has announced that it will demonstrate how its latest range of power module technology and architectures deliver high performance advantages at embedded world 2020 (Hall 3A, Stand 400).

In particular, the company plans to showcase its design of power module infrastructure for 5G telecom networks, cloud and edge computing data centres, and industrial applications including modern railway rolling stock at the trade show for embedded electronics systems.

The product portfolio includes new solutions including the ultra-wide input PKE8000A and PKE7000A series, DC/DC power modules for the industrial and railway sectors housed in sealed and encapsulated packaging. Alongside these, the PKM7500W and PKM7100W are two new series of ultra-wide input quarter-brick modules for powering railway rolling stock electronics equipment.

Additionally, the company will also present the PMU8000 series of point-of-load (PoL) converters which provide an excellent price/performance ratio in a compact, low-profile package. The new regulators offer high efficiencies of up to 95.3% (at half load) and excellent thermal performance, ensuring they can be used in harsh conditions. The regulators also include a loop optimisation feature, enabling their load-transient response to be optimised for different capacitive loads.

This new family of PoL regulators is joined by the BMR 469 series, which is ideal for high-current ICT applications delivering high power density, up to 160A per square inch, which saves valuable board space. Two variants with different output currents are available, both in compact packages as small as 25.4x12.7mm. The 50A option provides a low-profile solution with a maximum height of just 5.8mm, helping customers who need to find space for a large processor heatsink, or who want to place the device on the underside of their PCB.

At embedded world, Phil Goff of Flex Power Modules will be giving a presentation at the Exhibitors’ Forum (14:00 to 14:30, 26th February) that will explain how design tools such as the Flex Power Designer can speed up design cycles and time-to-market for power. The software makes design and debug work straightforward. In particular, its advanced simulation functions enable customers to optimise configuration parameters, so they can achieve a stable control loop with fast load-transient responses.
