Power application controller extends battery life

The charge pump-based motor power application controller and driver for brushless DC (BLDC) motors integrates multiple functions to provide a compact, microcontroller-based power and motor control solution.

It can be used in brushless motor control applications such as high-performance power tools (up to 24V), 12V server or DC fans, drones, and remote-controlled (RC) systems.

It is a system-on-chip (SoC) controller that enables high performance, high efficiency, and extended battery life in tools incorporating BLDC motors.

The SoC is based on a 150MHz Arm Cortex-M4F 32-bit microcontroller with 128Kbytes of flash memory, which provides designers with the flexibility to integrate features such as diagnostics and self-checking capabilities.

Qorvo’s highly configurable Power Manager is incorporated in the device This is a convenient, all-in-one power management solution that includes a buck-boost regulator for low-side gate drive supply, charge pump DC/DC for high-side gate drive supply, and four linear regulators with power and hibernate management.

The device also includes Qorvo’s Configurable Analog Front-End, which contains single-ended programmable gain amplifiers, differential programmable gain amplifiers, digital-to-analogue converters, comparators, and 10 analogue front end input-output pins.
