Designed to optimise power management functions, Toshiba Electronics Europe introduces a system PMIC for mobile products such as smartphones, tablets, handheld medical devices, industrial PDAs, barcode readers and portable instruments. The TC7734FTG integrates power path, switching charger, four buck converters, three LDO regulators and two LED backlight drivers.

The PMIC's charger block detects various USB port conditions and restricts the input current to 100, 500, 1000 or 1500mA. The charger functions operate automatically without external control signals and automatically change the system power source between the battery and USB connection as needed. The TC7734FTG adopts a 130nm analogue semiconductor process with very low on-resistance and low gate charge characteristics. It also integrates various power management blocks within a single device.

An external thermistor detects the battery’s temperature in order to prevent overheating while the mobile device is charging. Charger functions, output voltage levels, power sequences and many other functions can be programmed by the on-board I2C interface. User-programmable eFuse register settings enable the device to meet the needs of a wide variety of platforms. The IC also integrates various error detect functions, including thermal detect, over current limitation and LED open/short detection.

According to Transparency Market Research, rising demand for mobile products is driving concurrent growth in the market for PMICs, as manufacturers continually seek to reduce power consumption. Efficient and highly reliable power management solutions, such as the TC7734FTG, are needed in a short time-to-market window to overcome the conflicting challenges faced when designing battery-powered products. The PMIC market is predicted to have a CAGR of 6.15% from 2013 to 2019.

Supplied in a compact 9x9mm QFN64 package, the TC7734FTG supports input voltages of 3.4-5.5V. Samples of the PMIC are available now.
