Module simplifies power supply design for FPGAs

A dual 3A/single 6A step-down DC/DC power module, which simplifies power supply design for FPGAs, ASICs, MPUs and DSPs, has been introduced by Intersil. The ISL8203M measures 9.0×6.5×1.83mm and features an efficiency of 95%, providing power system designers with a high performance, easy to use solution for their low power, low voltage applications.

The device features a PWM controller, synchronous switching MOSFETs, inductors and passive components to build a power supply supporting an input voltage range of 2.85-6V. The power module, which has an adjustable output voltage between 0.8 and 5V, can be used to build a single output 6A power supply or a dual output 3A power supply.

The ISL8203M power module offers 15°C/W thermal performance and delivers 6A at 85°C without the need for heat sinks or a fan, maximising efficiency. For reliable and robust operation, the device is offered with over-temperature, over-current and under-voltage lockout protection.

“Our customers are building increasingly compact DC/DC solutions,” commented Mark Downing, Senior Vice President, Infrastructure and Industrial Power Products, Intersil. “The ISL8203M analogue power module offers the smallest footprint for a dual output low power solution without performance compromise, making it possible for customers to get the footprint and the efficiency they require.”

The ISL8203M is available now in a 9×6.5mm QFN package, priced at $5.97 and sold in 1,000 quantities.
