Maxim introduces the MAX15046, a 40V-input DC-DC controller that integrates rugged protection features to ensure reliable operation in even the harshest operating environments. This robust device is well suited for industrial power supplies, PLCs (programmable logic controllers), CNC (computer numerical control) systems, industrial computers, and base stations.
The MAX15046's patent-pending current-limit architecture provides temperature-compensated, lossless current sensing across the low-side MOSFET. This architecture protects the DC-DC components from damage during output-overload or short-circuit conditions without requiring a current-sense resistor. The current-limit algorithm ensures monotonic turn-on into the prebiased bus, while adaptive internal digital soft-start reduces the input inrush current. The MAX15046 also includes an enable input with a precise reference and power-good output to simplify power sequencing. Internal thermal shutdown provides an additional layer of protection.

The MAX15046 utilizes an externally programmable fixed-frequency architecture to alleviate the complexity of EMI filter design. The operating frequency is programmable from 100kHz to 1MHz. An internal, ±1% accurate reference allows the output voltage to be programmed from 0.6V to 85% of Vin using an external resistor-divider. The device includes high-performance drivers to deliver up to 25A of output current.
