Layered production cuts height & price of DC/DC converters

Using a layered substrate manufacturing process, the NXE1, 1W DC/DC converter is the first of a planned family of DC/DC converters from Murata. A transformer is embedded in the substrate, which saves space compared with conventional DC/DC converters.

The profile has been reduced from the company’s earlier generation of converters from 6.8 to 4.8mm. The total dimensions are 12.7×10.4×4.8mm. The isolated, surface mount converters are manufactured using automated processes that, according to the company, improve reliability and achieve consistent performance characteristics.

The first model, launched at electronica 2014, has +5VDC input and output; with 3VDC input versions to follow. Input to output isolation is up to 3kVDC.

The industry standard, pin-compatible footprint converter lends itself to being used as a replacement in existing designs as well as for new projects. Short circuit protection is standard and it operates over the industrial temperature range of -40 to +85°C. Certification to UL60950 is pending.
