Focusing on system efficiency and demanding reliability requirements for induction cooking applications, the 20A RC-H5 IGBTs have been announced by Infineon Technologies. The 1350V Reverse Conducting (RC) soft switching IGBT provides up to 30% reduction in switching losses compared to previous generations.

The reduced switching losses enable designers to use higher frequencies of up to 30KHz. Therefore, the efficiency of the system with an RC-H5 device is improved by 0.5% leading to an overall performance of the system of more than 92%. By selecting smaller inductors with less copper, designers can also realise lower overall system costs.

Compared to its predecessors, the RC-H5 provides improved reliability by reducing power dissipation and better thermal performance, operating at higher ambient temperatures of up to +175°C. The turn-on spike current has been cut by 10% which leads to less stress on passive components in the system increasing reliability. Additionally, the IGBTs offer improved EMI behaviour. This results in less filtering requirements and lower system costs for the designers.

“With this next generation of RC-H5 discretes Infineon confirms its IGBT technology leadership addressing the rigorous requirements of Induction Cooking applications. Once again we have pushed forward the boundaries of system efficiency and reliability by offering application-specific power switches to our customers. This is made possible by our deep technological knowledge and system understanding of home appliance applications,” comments Roland Stele, Marketing Director, IGBT Power Discretes, Infineon Technologies.

Available in a current class of 20A with 1200 and 1350V blocking voltage, the RC-H5 family is supplied in a TO-247 package. The RC-H5 1350V 20A is ready for shipping while the RC-H5 1200V 20A will be available in Q2 2014.
