Highly Integrated PMIC Provides a Cost-Effective Power Solution for Notebook LCD Panels

Maxim’s MAX17088, a power-management IC (PMIC) integrates a boost regulator, a programmable VCOM calibrator with nonvolatile memory, a high-current operational amplifier, and a level-shifting scan driver for notebook LCD panels

Developed using Maxim’s proprietary high-voltage BiCMOS process, this device includes all functions required to power the LCD source drivers, gate drivers, and VCOM backplane. Through this high level of integration, the MAX17088 provides a cost-effective power solution for LCD panels in notebooks and monitors.

The boost regulator has a 1.2MHz switching frequency and integrates a 20V, 150milliohm power MOSFET. It delivers output voltages up to 18V from a 1.8V to 5.5V input while achieving > 85% efficiency. The integrated operational amplifier drives the VCOM backplane and features ±150mA short-circuit current with a 40V/microsecond slew rate. The MAX17088 also integrates a scan driver that drives from -25V to +45V and allows output charge sharing to save power. The 2-wire, I2C-controlled VCOM calibrator provides 7-bit setting accuracy and minimizes connector pin count.
