A new two component spring contact for high power connections has been released by Stäubli Electrical Connectors, with the MULTILAM flexo ML-CUX, developed primarily for manufacturers of systems and equipment in the electricity supply and distribution sector.

Its patent pending design has optimised electrical and mechanical properties, producing both a high current carrying capacity and low contact resistance, thereby causing minimal contact heating even with a constant high load and after thousands of mating cycles.

Part of the MULTILAM flexo line, the ML-CUX can be used in a variety of locations in switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, isolator switches and feedthroughs. Its low profile allows it to be easily manually inserted into a straight, shallow groove around the contact, even for larger diameters.

The high number of mating cycles possible is particularly advantageous in applications involving expansion joints, where thermal cycling can mean that the connector constantly needs to slide while remaining in full electrical contact.

Able to withstand extreme current peaks, the ML-CUX has a short circuit current carrying capacity of up to 4.4 kA/cm. This can mean that fewer bands are needed in larger configurations where previously multiples would be required, enabling a more compact design and reduced material costs without having to compromise on performance.

A further advantage is its high tolerance compensation. The large contact area makes it highly flexible and able to cope with significant angular and axial offsets. This gives the manufacturer more freedom to design a variety of contact solutions and allows simpler, more cost-effective production.
