DS1842A: 76V APD current monitor significantly reduces settling time for GPON modules

Maxim introduces the DS1842A 76V APD (avalanche photo diode), bias-output-stage and current-monitoring IC. By employing Maxim’s state-of-the art CMOS process technology, the device integrates a high-voltage current source; several current mirrors for monitoring APD current; and a FET switch configured to work in conjunction with an external DC-DC controller to implement a boost DC-DC converter.

The result is a significantly faster settling time for GPON modules and a very competitive cost in a small package. The DS1842A is ideal for providing bias to, and current monitoring for APDs in PON-OLT and PON-ONT equipment.

The DS1842A is fully specified over the -40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius temperature range, and is available in a small 3mm x 3mm 14-pin TDFN with exposed pad.
