Drivers for 1,200V applications offer up to 8A output

A joint development at Power Integrations has resulted in the Scale-iDriver ICs, using FluxLink from the low voltage team and the high voltage team’s expertise in soft shutdown.

The galvanically isolated, single-channel, gate driver ICs range from 2.5 to 8A output, the highest output current available without an external booster, says the company. The ICs are optimised for driving both IGBTs and MOSFETs, using FluxLink magneto-inductive, bi-directional communications technology. This eliminates the need for opto-electronics and the associated compensation circuitry, to enhance operational stability while reducing system complexity, says the company. The isolation technology is coupled with advanced system safety, such as the company’s Advanced Soft Shut Down (ASSD) mechanism. This protects the power semiconductor switch in the event of a short circuit. ASSD is automatically triggered by monitoring desaturation levels and requires no extra components.

ASSD and other protection features commonly found in medium- and high-voltage applications are integrated in the Scale-iDriver ICs.

TheeSOP package features 9.5mm of creepage and a CTI of 600 for “substantial” operating voltage margin and high system reliability.

The gate driver ICs reduce component count for inverters up to 110 kW, saving space and BoM. A low-cost booster stage can be added to develop efficient, space-saving, reliable inverter designs rated up to 400kW (15A). The devices meet the IEC 60664-1 and IEC 61800-5-1 standards, and operate from -40 to +125°C and at frequencies of up to 250kHz. The company’s Advanced Soft Shut Down (ASSD) mechanism protects the power semiconductor switch in the event of a short circuit. ASSD is automatically triggered by monitoring desaturation levels and requires no extra components.

Target applications are industrial drives, power supplies and UPS, PV inverters (of all sizes), industrial HVAC, EV charging and traction equipment including commercial EVs.

The SID1132K (2.5A), SID1152K (5A), SID1182K (8A) are available. Reference designs RDHP-1608 (2.5, 5 and 8A versions) and RDHP-1526 (15A) are also available.
