A ULDO linear regulator has been launched by X-REL, signalling an expansion of the company's power management portfolio. The XTR70010 high current, linear regulator has been designed for high-reliability, extreme temperature and extended lifetime power supply applications and can provide 32 different output voltages with no external resistor. The device can also operate as a capacitor-less regulator in applications where the output current does not present rapid transients.

The most noticeable feature of this regulator is its dropout voltage of only 0.9V per Amp of output current at 230°C, having only a half the power losses of its closest competitor and largely outperforming other regulators in the extreme temperature market. Capable to operate with input voltages from 2.8V to 5.5V and provide more than 1.5A of output current with no requirement on the minimum dropout at lower currents, the XTR70010 can provide 32 different output voltages in steps of 100mV from 0.5V to 3.6V based on only internal settings or operate as other regulators in the market where the output voltage is set by an external resistor divider.

The ability of the XTR70010 to operate from input voltages as low as 2.8V together with its ultra-low dropout capability makes it ideal for power supplies for microprocessors, memories, sensors and for post regulation after a low voltage Point-of-Load (POL) DC-to-DC converters.

Among the several state-of-the-art protections and features, the XTR70010 includes hiccup over current protection, low-power mode, under-voltage-lockout (UVLO), thermal shut-down with variable threshold, output overshoot limitation, protection against badly decoupled input networks, soft startup and soft shut down.

Gonzalo Picun, CTO at X-REL Semiconductor, emphasized “With the release of its ULDO, high-current, low supply voltage linear regulator, X-REL Semiconductor is not at all entering in a “me-too” strategy, but instead introducing a cutting-edge device that breaks the old frontiers and unleashes new paradigms in power supply design for high reliability, extreme temperature applications”.

As any other X-REL Semiconductor product, the XTR70010 is able to reliably operate well below and above the -60°C +230°C (5 years at +230°C) temperature range. Being operational at high temperatures is mandatory not only in applications where the environment is at elevated temperature, but also where self-heating of a power device makes the temperature increase inside the application casing. Additionally, all X-REL Semiconductor products can be used in applications running at lower temperatures (e.g. from 100°C to 200°C) where extended lifetime is expected or where failing is not an option. For example, the expected lifetime of X-REL Semiconductor parts in a driver application operating at Tj=150°C is over 35 years.

The XTR70010 is already available and can be immediately deployed on niche as well as on large-scale markets in high-reliability compact hermetic or plastic packages, as well as bare dies.
