DC/DC converters receive medical safety approvals

Artesyn Embedded Technologies has announced the AEE15W-M and AEE20W-M series, the new 15 and 20W DC/DC converters that provide OEMs with an economical solution for demanding applications in industrial and medical instrumentation requiring a certified supplementary or reinforced insulation system to comply with industrial or medical safety standards.

The reinforced insulation system, critical for medical equipment applications, is rated for 300VAC working voltage and 4,200VAC RMS input/output isolation. The new DC/DC modules are certified to the 3rd Edition UL/CSA/EN/IEC 60601-1 medical safety standard and are rated for 2X Means Of Patient Protection (MOPP). This highly reliable family has a calculated MTBF of greater than one million hours.

Housed in a compact 2×1″ plastic case, the AEE15W-M and AEE20W-M series offer up to 89% efficiency with a wide input voltage range from 9-75VDC with three 2:1 input voltage ratings (9-18V, 18-36V and 36-75V).

Both families consist of fully regulated single 5, 12 and 15V single output models and +12/-12 and +15/-15V dual output models.

The DC/DC modules can operate from -40 up to 80°C with full power available to 60°C and power derating at higher temperatures.

They offer additional features such as the low leakage current required in medical applications, protection from overvoltage, and EMI characteristics that can meet EN 55022, class A and FCC level A.
