Designed for industrial and railway transportation applications, the robust PKE3000PI and PKE5000PI DC/DC converters have been introduced by Ericsson. The converters are particularly suitable for use in distributed power architectures and industrial control systems which typically have a 12, 24 or 48V power supply line.

These applications require a board power supply to operate across a large range of input voltages, without affecting the output when the input line is experiencing high fluctuation. The converters are also suitable for ICT applications that are operated with remote power supplies and/or multiple battery voltages.

While the PKE3000PI operates over a 9 -36V input voltage range, the PKE5000PI operates over 18-75V. Four output voltages are provided by the converters which deliver 3.3V/4.5A, 5V/3A, 12V/1.25A and 15V/1A. The converters, which have an typical efficiency of 89% at 12V output (full load), provide low power dissipation and high thermal resistance.

The PKE3000PI and PKE5000PI also meet requirements for board development purposes or remote-feed applications where voltages are delivered to the load via long cables. The converters, which meet basic insulation and safety requirements according to IEC/UL60950-1, have a 1500V I/O isolation and an MTBF of one million hours. Other features include output over-voltage protection, input under-voltage shutdown, over temperature protection, output short-circuit protection, output voltage adjust function, monotonic startup and remote control.

Measuring industry-standard dimensions of 25.4x25.4x10.8mm, the converters are compact. The converters are protected from dust, high humidity and highly corrosive or highly vibrational environments through a robust enclosure.

“In the industrial arena in particular, many applications require an ultra-wide-input voltage to handle a large variety of power sources," said Patrick Le Fèvre, Marketing and Communication Director, Ericsson Power Modules. “These compact and highly robust DC/DC converter enable the possibility to use a single module to accommodate at least two different battery voltages with a single module, thereby reducing inventory and also delivering flexibility for designers that are developing single boards to handle different voltage sources.”
