Advantages of load switches over discrete MOSFETs

In this video, Alek Kaknevicius, Applications Engineer at Texas Instruments, discusses TI’s integrated load switches and what advantages they bring over a discrete MOSFET solution. In general, load switches are put in between a power supply and a load. When the load needs to be on, the load switch is closed. And when the load can be turned off, the load switch is opened.

Kaknevicius explains: “To implement a load discretely, a MOSFET needs to be used as a switching element. This is known as the Pass FET. By itself, the MOSFET is not a very robust solution, so additional components need to be used. In the case of a PMOS transistor, a control FET and resistor are added. To a controlled output voltage rise time to the solution, a capacitor needs to be added to slow the charge of the PMOS gate.”
