IXYS has announced that its wholly owned UK subsidiary, IXYS UK Westcode, introduced two 6kV pressure contact rectifier diodes. The two latest diodes have current ratings of 2,830 and 3,090A and are encapsulated in fully hermetic ceramic packages with copper electrodes.

The 69mm die devices are available in industry standard 26 and 35mm thick packages. The 26mm parts have an average current rating of 3,090A and the 35mm parts an average current rating of 2,830A at a heat sink temperature of 55°C. Both parts offer a surge current rating of 36kA. The fully hermetic package has a 66mm electrode contact diameter with an industry standard overall diameter of 100mm. The construction uses an improved process when compared to earlier IXYS high current rectifier diode designs with the silicon die directly bonded to a metallic disc.

This improved structure offers both better transient thermal conditions and overall greater robustness, when compared to designs with free floating silicon. These devices offer the possibility for reducing series parallel combinations in very high megawatt rectifier applications thereby reducing component count and simplifying the mechanical construction.

“These new devices offer the highest possible current density in this package size and are suited to applications in the high megawatts. Their introduction expands the range of parts offered by IXYS UK Westcode in this voltage class,” commented Frank Wakeman, Marketing and Technical Support Manager, IXYS UK.

The devices are available in industry standard 26 and 35mm thick packages and three voltage grades. Designations are: 26mm thick package, W3090HA520 (Vrrm 5,200V), W3090HA560 (Vrrm 5,600V) and W3090HA600 (Vrrm 6,000V) and 35mm thick package, W2830HE520 (Vrrm 5,200V), W2830HE560 (Vrrm 5,600V) and W2830HE6000 (Vrrm 6,000V).

The 6kV voltage rating is suitable where 3kVDC output is required. Typical applications include traction rectifiers and substations, front end rectification for medium voltage drives and all rectifier applications requiring devices in this power rating.
