Bear Power Supplies, a business unit of Z-AXIS based in western New York, has begun shipping a 10W medical power unit designed to meet tighter safety requirements on leakage current in clinical environments.

The device, designated BPC000151, is produced in the US and incorporates one Means of Patient Protection. When paired with equipment offering a similar level of protection, it can be used in applications requiring compliance with the 2 MOPP standard, which governs the safety of devices that may come into direct contact with patients.

Leakage current limits are defined under IEC 60601-1, an international benchmark for electrical safety in medical equipment. Excess leakage poses a particular risk if a ground connection fails, potentially turning the patient into a path to ground. Manufacturers have come under pressure to reduce leakage caused by factors such as parasitic capacitance and insufficient insulation.

Bear said its new unit offers a leakage current of under 0.5uA. It operates with an input of 22–26V DC and supplies a 12V output at up to 10W, with input–output capacitance of under 5pF. The company’s engineering and manufacturing operations are co-located with Z-AXIS near Rochester, New York.

The release follows Bear’s announcement last year that it had shipped a 750W CF-rated medical supply for cardiac diagnostics.

Michael Allen, President, said the company had established a position in low-leakage designs, and highlighted its willingness to customise products, even at low volumes, offering options such as non-standard voltages, unusual form factors, compact designs for portable devices, and encapsulated configurations.

Bear Power Supplies is certified to ISO 9001:2015 and develops custom units for industrial and medical applications. Its parent company, Z-AXIS, provides design, prototyping, and manufacturing services for complex electronic and electromechanical systems.
