Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. today announced a new series of TANTAMOUNT low-ESR solid tantalum chip capacitors with a built-in fuse. Offered in three molded case sizes, the TF3 series is designed to provide a very high level of protection against short circuits in safety-critical applications.
TF3 series devices feature an internal electronic fusing mechanism that activates within 0.1 second with a minimum of 5 A applied at + 25 °C. In the event of a failure due to excessive current flow, this fusing prevents damage to circuit components.

With their low ESR down to 0.25 Ω at + 25 °C and 100 kHz, the capacitors are optimized for high-current applications (> 10 A) requiring this level of safety, including industrial applications, medical instrumentation, diagnostic and control equipment, high-end computing and data storage, and telecom base stations.

The TF3 devices offer a capacitance range of 0.47 µF to 470 µF in the C, D, and E case codes. The capacitors provide a high ripple current carrying capability and feature a voltage range from 4 V to 50 V over an operating temperature range of - 55 °C to + 125 °C.

Compatible with high-volume automatic pick-and-place equipment, the TF3 series features standard RoHS-compliant tin terminations, with Sn/Pb terminations available. The devices are 100 % surge current tested and meet EIA 535BAAC requirements.

Samples and production quantities of the new low-ESR TF3 solid tantalum chip capacitors are available now, with lead times of 6 to 8 weeks for larger orders.
