Targeting automotive, industrial and military applications, Vishay has released an AEC-Q200-qualified, 25W thick film power resistor in a compact surface-mount TO-252 style (DPAK) package. Saving space compared with previous solutions, the Vishay Sfernice DTO25 provides power dissipation of at least 3W on the PCB, and a wide range of resistance values.

The non-inductive DTO25 provides a resistance range from 0.016Ω to 700kΩ. Offering a compact 8.2x7.3mm footprint with a 2.8mm profile, the thick film resistor can support more than 10 times more energy than competing components in the DPAK package - up to 5kW+ for a 10-5s pulse and 10J for a 0.1s pulse.

The device provides long-term reliability for power supply, load resistor, snubber, power conversion, and pre-charging and discharging in battery management systems for hybrid and electric cars, missile control boards, and UPS. In these applications it allows designers to replace several chip resistors with one device to lower costs, simplify layouts, and reduce the size of their end products.

Thermal resistance for the DTO25 at 25W and +25°C is 5°C/W junction-to-case. The resistor features a standard temperature coefficient of ± 150ppm/°C with standard tolerances of ±1 to ±10%. Connections for the resistor are tinned copper, and they are specified for operation over a -55 to +150°C temperature range. The device is RoHS compliant, offers a moisture sensitivity level of 1, and supports soldering temperatures at +270°C for 10 seconds.

Samples and production quantities of the DTO25 are available with lead times of eight to 10 weeks for larger orders.
