Micrel has introduced the MIC94161/62/63/64/65; a family of high-side load switches with low on resistance (14.5m) capable of delivering up to 3A of continuous current in a small 1mm x 1.5mm wafer level chip-scale package. These small devices feature true reverse current protection with a wide input voltage range of 1.7V to 5.5V.

This makes them ideally suited for low power or space-constrained applications such as smart phones, tablets, mobile computers, set top boxes, and solid state drives. The MIC9416x family is available in volume with 1,000 pricing starting at $0.29.

"This new generation of load switches offers small size and low power consumption.  Due to their ultra-low on-resistance with high current capability and fault protection features, these devices are ideal for space-constrained or battery operated portable applications," stated Brian Hedayati, vice president of marketing for high performance linear and power solutions at Micrel.  "With their true reverse blocking circuit, these devices can reduce system design complexity which provides system isolation and protection while their controlled slew rate helps to prevent any power rail system glitches."

Other features of these devices include an active pull-down circuit (MIC94162/MIC94164) that discharges the output capacitors when the device is turned off, internal soft start function (MIC94161/MIC94164/MIC94165) that reduces in-rush input current and input over voltage protection (MIC94161).  These devices are specified to operate from -40ºC to +125 ºC.
