Designed to save space in automotive, industrial, computer and consumer applications, Vishay Intertechnology has released a surface-mount Power Metal Strip resistor. The Vishay Dale WSHM2818 combines a 7W power rating with low resistance values down to 1mΩ in the compact 2818 case size.

The construction of the WSHM2818 resistor incorporates improved thermal management and a solid metal nickel-chrome or manganese-copper alloy resistive element with TCR of under 20ppm/ºC. This results in a high-power resistor in the 2818 package size that maintains the electrical characteristics and performance of the Power Metal Strip construction, such as 1000h load life stability and good resistance to short time overload of less than ±1%. The device's high power-to-footprint ratio allows designers to save board space and create smaller end products by replacing larger resistors with similar power capability and multiple devices with lower power ratings.

The AEC-Q200-qualified resistor suits all types of precision current sensing, voltage division, and high power pulse load applications, including switching regulators, current detectors, power supplies and power amplifiers in automotive electronic controls such as engine, injector, brushless DC motors, ABS and climate and battery management controls.

The WSHM2818 also fits into industrial controls, including down-hole test & measurement equipment for fossil fuel well drilling, inverter controls for HVAC systems, motor drives and DC/DC converters for servers, VRMs for computers and Li-Ion battery safety and management.

Like all Power Metal Strip resistors, the device features an all-welded construction that contributes to its electrical performance. A proprietary processing technique produces low resistance values of 1-100mΩ, with tight tolerance of ±1.0%. The WSHM2818 provides inductance of less than 5nH, a frequency response to 50MHz, low thermal EMF (under 3μV/°C), and an operating temperature range from -65 to +170°C. The device is RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay GREEN.

Samples and production quantities of the resistor are available, with a lead time of six to ten weeks for larger orders.
