Vishay has announced what it says is the industry’s first Power Metal Strip resistor to feature a high 0.20-W power rating in the compact 0603 package size. With double the power capacity of the standard WSL0603-type device, the WSL0603... 18 is a small, surface-mount resistor intended for high-power, current-sensing applications in dc-to-dc converters, power/Li-Ion battery management systems, and VRMs in computer and telecommunications systems. In automotive systems, the resistor is optimized for electronic controls, including driver information electronics, engine, chassis, and climate controls.
Featuring specially selected and stabilized materials, the new resistor offers a high power-to-package-size ratio while maintaining the superior electrical characteristics of the Power Metal Strip construction. By featuring the same high power ratings of larger devices, the WSL0603... 18 enables OEMs to use smaller PCBs, which in turn increases manufacturing speed and reduces raw material costs, while meeting market demand for more compact, higher-performing end products.

By utilizing Vishay’s proprietary processing technique, the WSL0603... 18 offers an extremely low resistance range of 0.015Ω to 0.1Ω at standard tolerances of ±0.5% and ±1.0%. The device features the same TCR (±75ppm/°C) and thermal EMF (< 3μV/°C) as the standard WSL0603 resistor, while offering an excellent frequency response to 50MHz, and very low inductance ranging from 0.5nH to 5nH.

With a high-temperature capacity to +170°C, the new resistor provides resistance to extreme temperatures, as well as to thermal and mechanical shock, moisture, and vibration. Its all-welded construction features solderable terminations and a resistive element of either solid metal nickel-chrome or a manganese-copper alloy.

Provided in 8 mm tape-and-reel form, samples and production quantities of the WSL0603... 18 resistor are available now, with a lead time of four to six weeks for larger orders.
