Protecting single-cell Li-ion or Li-poly battery packs, the AP9101C battery protection IC has been announced by Diodes Incorporated. The device can turn off external MOSFET switches when detecting over-charge voltage, over-discharge voltage, over-charge current, over-discharge current and other abnormalities. This is particularly important in consumer markets for products such as smartphones.

High-precision voltage detection over the full -40 to +85°C temperature range promotes maximum cell lifetime and safe operation during charge and discharge cycles. The AP9101C also features a built-in time delay circuit that allows the various protection functions to be implemented with fewer components and without external capacitors.

The AP9101C provides design flexibility with or without power-down mode and can be quickly customised to protect different cell specifications in various applications. A low quiescent current of 3μA in normal mode and just 0.1μA when powered down delivers useful power saving benefits.

Offered with standard SOT25 and SOT26 package options, the AP9101C is priced at $0.11 each in 3,000 to 10,000 unit quantities.
