Toshiba Electronics announces new 16-channel constant current LED driver with 65536-step grey scale function

Toshiba Electronics has expanded its family of LED drivers with a new device that can maintain constant currents of between 1.5mA and 90mA. Combining high-accuracy brightness control with a built-in PWM grey scale capability, the 16-channel TC62D722 is ideal for traffic signs, information boards and other applications built around multiple colour LEDs.

The integrated functionality of the new driver means that 256-step output brightness control can be achieved with the addition of just a single resistor. In addition, the on-board PWM capability offers 16-, 14-, 12- and 10-bit operation to deliver up to 65536-step grey scale control per channel.

Operating from a supply voltage of between 3.0V and 5.5V, the TC62D722 is rated for output voltages up to 17V. Channel-to-channel current accuracy is specified as ±1.5%, as is IC-to-IC accuracy. As a result the brightness of large displays built around multiple LED chains and drivers can be maintained within tight tolerances.

The TC62D722 features CMOS-compatible I/O interfaces and is available in 24-pin SSOP, HTSSOP24 and QSOP packages . These are pin-compatible with other members of constant current LED drivers. Comprehensive protection functionality includes thermal shutdown (TSD), automatic output open detection (OOD) and automatic output short circuit detection (OSD). A power-on-rest (PoR) capability and Output Delay function are also provided. The latter prevents the possibility of overcurrent conditions when all LEDs are switched on simultaneously by incorporating a short delay between channels.

Designed for optimum efficiency, the new driver features a standby current consumption of just 1µA. A small reference board for evaluation is available on request.
