The private, non-profit Swiss research and technology organisation, CSEM, has announced that its Vision-in-Package system for real-time embedded facial recognition was recognised by the judges of the annual Vision Systems Design Innovators Awards programme. The judging panel consisted of esteemed experts from system integrator and end-user companies and CSEM was honoured with a gold-level award.

The Vision-in-Package (VIP) system is a tiny, complete camera system with a low-power processor, a high-dynamic-range image sensor, optics, storage and communication interfaces. The facial recognition application runs in real time and is fully embedded on the VIP. Facial recognition is just one application of the VIP system. Others include robotic guidance, autonomous driving applications, smart homes, personal health monitoring, automated farming, and product verification.

“Compared with face analysis systems that run on powerful HW architectures, CSEM’s solution requires orders of magnitude less CPU time and memory – a combination well-suited to cost-effective, small-space applications,” explained Alain-Serge Porret, Vice President of the Integrated and Wireless Systems Division at CSEM.

Alan Bergstein, publisher of Vision Systems Design, said: "This prestigious programme allows Vision Systems Design to celebrate and recognise the most innovative products and services in the vision and image processing industry. Our 2017 Honourees are an outstanding example of companies who are making an impact in the industry."

The Innovators Awards are judged based on the following criteria:

  • Originality
  • Innovation
  • Impact on designers, systems integrators, end users
  • Fulfilling a need in the market that hasn’t been addressed
  • Leveraging a novel technology
