RGBW colour sensor integrates signal processing IC

Providing ambient light spectral sensitivity with responses close to that of the human eye, a digital RGBW sensor has been introduced by Vishay Intertechnology. The VEML6040 incorporates photo-pin-diodes (RGBW) and a signal processing IC while offering an I²C bus interface for simple operation. The device senses red, green, blue and white light with 16-bit resolution for each colour channel.

The VEML6040 is suited for consumer devices such as smartphones, digital cameras and TVs, where it allows the brightness and colour temperature of backlighting to be adjusted based on ambient light. This results in LCD and LED panels that are more comfortable for end users' eyes. The sensor saves space, lowers costs and simplifies designs by incorporating the circuitry for colour balancing, backlight control and colour temperature measurement in one device. This eliminates the need for an external resistor. 

The VEML6040's built-in ambient light photo-diode offers extremely high sensitivity, enabled by Filtron technology, with detection from 0.0056lx to 11.7klx. This enables operation in applications with dark lens designs. Operating over a temperature range from -40 to +85°C, the sensor provides fluorescent light flicker immunity and low power in shutdown mode of less than 1µA. The device features an operating voltage and I²C bus voltage range of 2.5 to 3.6V.

The RGBW colour sensor is supplied in a lead-free, 4-pin OPLGA package. The VEML6040 is RoHS-compliant, halogen-free and Vishay GREEN. Samples and production quantities are available now, with lead times of six to eight weeks for large orders.
