Avago Technologies has introduced a series 3-channel reflective optical encoder devices suitable for use in low power miniaturised motion control systems such as stepper motors, electrical actuators, piezoelectric drives and portable medical appliances. The manufacturer has claimed that the AEDR-87xx is the industry’s smallest 3-channel reflective optical encoder.

Featuring an encoding resolution of up to 318 lines per inch (LPI), the AEDR-87xx optical encoder provides dual analog outputs interfacing directly with the external interpolator for high precision motion control measurements. Packaged in the industry’s smallest form factor for 3-channel reflective optical encoder, it supports 3.3 and 5V supply voltages for low power applications.

The optical encoder devices integrate an interpolator for four, eight and 16 times interpolation and feature built-in automatic LED current regulation. Operating over a temperature range from -20 to +85°C, the AEDR-87xx encoders have compact dimensions of 3.95x3.4x0.956mm.

“Reflective optical encoder technology is vital to many miniaturised motion control systems. As modern appliances get smaller in size and consume less power, so too are the critical components such as a motion control encoder embedded inside many of these appliances. Avago’s latest AEDR-87xx is the best-in-class reflective optical encoder solution with added flexibility addressing a wide range of design challenges for modern miniaturised motion control systems,” comments Hassan Hussain, Vice President and General Manager, Motion Control Product Division (MCPD), Avago Technologies.

Samples and production quantities of the AEDR-87xx reflective optical encoders are available now.
