A series of PFC offline AC/DC drivers, designed for high performance LED lighting applications, has been released by ON Semiconductor. Single stage design implementations up to 60W that require high power factors are supported by the NCL30085, NCL30086 and NCL30088, while two stage design implementations up to 150W that require low optical ripple and wide LED forward voltage variation are supported by the NCL30030.

The NCL30085, NCL30086 and NCL30088 utilise a power factor corrected current control algorithm, making them suitable for flyback buck-boost, and SEPIC topologies. To deliver optimum efficiency across wide line and load levels, the devices operate in a quasi-resonant mode. Current regulation is achieved from the primary side by the control methodology in which the drivers employ.

The non-dimmable NCL30088 is complemented by the NCL30086, which is ‘smart-dimmable’, supporting analogue and/or PWM dimming with a single input that controls the average LED current. The NCL30085 supports three levels of log step dimming: 70, 25 and 5%. By toggling the AC switch on/off to signal the controller to lower the LED current point, the device permits light output. To prevent overheating and enable manufacturers to support longer lifetime warranties, all three drivers feature user configurable current thermal fold-back mechanisms.

The NCL30030 is a two stage PFC controller and quasi-resonant flyback controller. To achieve low harmonic distortion and near-unity power factor while operating in critical conduction mode, the device utilises multiplier architecture. The controller is particularly suitable for commercial lighting such as lowbay, highbay and streetlighting.

“Compact, robust and flexible, these PFC controllers address the need for higher performance solutions in the LED lamp and driver market,” commented Shane Chilton, Senior Director, AC/DC Power Conversion Division, ON Semiconductor. “These solutions deliver precise current regulation via our unique architecture. This translates into LED lighting designs that are more flexible and can be future proofed with a common control approach.”

The NCL30085 and NCL30088 are offered in SOIC-8 packages, while the NCL30086 is offered in SOIC-10 package. The drivers are priced from $0.35 per unit and sold in 10,000 unit quantities. The NCL30030 is offered in an SOIC−16 package, with 1 pin removed for high voltage spacing. The controller is priced from $0.65 per unit and sold in 10,000 unit quantities.
