Supertex, Inc. has introduced HV881, a sixteen-channel, dimmable, electroluminescent (EL) lamp driver designed to deliver high voltage output to EL lamps used in backlighting in cellular phone keypads and other mobile devices.

HV881 is designed to drive up to sixteen EL lamps with individually selectable brightness levels and dimming capabilities. It features a 340V peak-to-peak output from an input voltage of 1.8V to 5.5V to deliver uniform high brightness in the lamps. The IC uses an external MOSFET, a single inductor and a minimal number of passive components to drive the EL lamps. It is compatible with single cell lithium ion batteries and offers split supply capability.

HV881 delivers consistent high brightness and individual EL lamp control for backlighting keypads and displays in mobile electronic devices,” states Stephen Lin, Vice President of Marketing for Supertex. “The IC features very low audible noise and split supply capability for prolonged battery life.”

The HV881 is available in a QFN-32 (HV881K7-G) package. The part is RoHS compliant. Samples are available from stock. Lead-time for production quantities is 4-6 weeks ARO. Pricing is US$3.97 each for the HV881K7-G in 1K quantities
