At the MTEC Exhibition, Balluff demonstrated their new Vision sensor for detecting and identifying 1-D codes (barcode) and 2-D codes (Data Matrix). The Balluff BVS-E Identification reads the commonly found codes and can even verify texts and number sequences. It also reads multiple codes in one pass saving repeated read cycles and eliminating the need for several sensors. It even works reliably under challenging conditions, such as directly imprinted parts which can often present a special challenge, for example when they are applied to cast materials or reflective surfaces.
Balluff Vision Sensors have the footprint of a credit card and are available with built-in processing electronics, lighting and digital outputs. Once configured they run autonomously. The results “Inspection OK” or Inspection NOK” are available directly on the digital outputs. An RS232 or Ethernet interface can be used to output the code data and trace processed parts.

The range of readable codes comprise the usual suspects and includes in terms of barcode the popular Interleaved 2-of-5, Code 39, Code 128, Pharmacode, Codabar, and EAN 8 to EAN 13 UPC-E. Using OCV (Optical Character Verification) even texts or number sequences can be verified based on learned pixel patterns.

The new BVS-E Identification shows its special ability when reading multiple codes simultaneously. This feature is often used in applications where, in addition to barcode, Data Matrix code and plain text marking are used and eliminates the need to use multiple specialised sensors. The outstanding read performance of the BVS-E Identification is also boosted by the 360° Locator tool, labels no longer needing to be exactly aligned.

Integrating BVS-E Identification in new or existing automation applications is simple, operation and start-up are handled using the free, easy-to-use ConVis software. The entire process is guided and requires no knowledge of programming language or expensive training.

Users of EPLAN CAD and CAE software can download the macros for the BVS Vision Sensors from the Balluff website at no charge and use drag-and-drop for 1-D and 2-D code detection, reducing costs and increasing quality.

Vision sensors form part of the Balluff product range. Our sensors solve a variety of applications including pill counting, package presence, fill levels, clear bottle detection, data tracking and error proofing. Everyday, around the world, Balluff sensors are increasing production throughput and product quality for thousands of satisfied users striving to improve their manufacturing processes and lower their costs.
